Smith Lake is a classic kettle lake, formed by the melting of a large ice block at the end of the Wisconsin Glaciation. The lake is surrounded by steep slopes, giving a feeling of seclusion and privacy (and perhaps a bit of vulnerability to imagined predators watching from above). Smith Lake is named for Joe Smith, a trapper and prospector who was the sole resident of the ghost town Silver City from 1884 to 1937.
