Sentinel Lake and Sentinel Pass are named for the Grand Sentinel, a towering spire of quartzite in Paradise Valley (just north of the pass). Many trail guides and maps refer to Sentinel as one of the Minnestimma Lakes. This small, shallow lake is a popular rest and picnic stop for hikers on their way to the pass. The crowds can be overwhelming and the yodellers annoying, but the alpine meadows and dramatic views of the Valley of Ten Peaks more than compensate.
